A crypto exchange strengthens KYC and AML with official data

How a cryptocurrency exchange can strengthen KYC and anti-money-laundering (AML) by validating identity in real time and keeping an audit trail.

The challenge

A crypto-asset exchange operates under growing regulatory pressure: it must identify every customer (KYC), monitor risk and report suspicious activity (AML). Accounts opened with fake identities and the use of straw men threatened compliance and reputation. Verification relied on manual checks and databases that were not always up to date, producing false positives and friction with legitimate customers.

The solution

Real-time CPF validation was combined with the KYC process. At sign-up, the system confirms the CPF format and registration status, cross-checks identity data and records the result with a timestamp, forming an audit trail. Consistent checks feed the risk policy and the enhanced due diligence for sensitive profiles, such as PEPs, within the AML program.

Results

  • Identity verified at the official source before releasing deposits and withdrawals.
  • Timestamped audit trail of every verification to satisfy the regulator.
  • Fewer false positives: legitimate customers pass without unnecessary friction.
  • A basis for enhanced due diligence on higher-risk profiles (e.g. PEPs).

Compliance stopped being a spreadsheet and became part of the product: every account is born with a verified, recorded identity.
