A lending fintech cuts onboarding fraud with real-time (D+0) validation

How a digital lending fintech can cut identity fraud and chargebacks by validating CPF in real time (D+0) straight from the official source, without adding friction to onboarding.

The challenge

A digital lending fintech opens accounts fully online and grants loans in minutes. Fast onboarding is the edge, but also the entry point for fraud: accounts opened with third-party CPFs, invalid documents or deceased holders drove defaults and disputes. Internal databases lagged behind (D+30 or more), so the registration status at approval time did not always reflect reality.

The solution

Real-time CPF lookups (D+0) straight from the Federal Revenue were integrated into the onboarding flow via REST API. For every new account, the system validates the CPF format, confirms the registration status (regular, suspended, cancelled, deceased holder) and cross-checks name and date of birth before releasing credit. High-risk cases go to manual review; the rest proceed friction-free. Sub-second responses keep the experience instant.

Results

  • Account openings with irregular or deceased-holder CPFs are blocked at the sign-up step.
  • Fewer disputes and chargebacks tied to identity fraud.
  • Credit decisions based on current registration status, not on a stale database.
  • Onboarding keeps sub-second responses, with no captcha or mandatory date of birth.

We now decide credit with today’s data, not last month’s — and identity fraud stopped being the onboarding bottleneck.
