An e-commerce marketplace verifies business sellers with CNPJ and QSA lookups

How an e-commerce marketplace can speed up seller sign-up and cut ghost stores by verifying CNPJ, registration status and ownership (QSA) in real time.

The challenge

A marketplace connecting thousands of merchants to buyers needed to grow its seller base without opening the door to ghost stores and scams. Manual business onboarding was slow: proving legal name, registration status and ownership required documents emailed back and forth and human review, creating queues and drop-off. Unfit or closed companies could still sell before being caught.

The solution

Real-time CNPJ lookups were integrated into seller onboarding. When a CNPJ is entered, the system auto-fills legal name, trade name, CNAE and address, confirms the registration status (active, suspended, unfit, closed) and returns the QSA to check partners and the ultimate beneficial owner (KYB). What used to be manual review became automatic approval for regular companies, with review only in risky cases.

Results

  • Business-seller sign-up auto-filled from the CNPJ, reducing drop-off.
  • Unfit or closed companies blocked before their first sale.
  • Partner (QSA) and beneficial-owner checks built into the KYB flow.
  • Risk team focused on suspicious cases, not on typing registration data.

The seller types only the CNPJ and the rest of the form fills itself — and ghost stores stop at the door.
